Meet one of our latest case studies featuring a 3D printed Energy Storage & Return (ESR) Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO). This brace was digitally designed and printed using Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) technology.

What is an ESR AFO?

An ESR AFO is a custom ankle brace that stores energy at the beginning of the walk cycle and releases it to assist forward motion later in the cycle. It supports weak ankle musculature and provides spring-like propulsion with each step. For patients with drop foot, weak plantarflexors, and chronic ankle instability, it restores a more natural gait pattern, increases walking efficiency, and adds ankle stability. Helping reduce the risk of ankle rolling and falls.

This particular individual came to us struggling with mobility, chronic pain, and difficulty fully benefiting from physiotherapy due to the lasting effects of permanent nerve damage from an injury. They reported constantly rolling their ankle and had lost confidence in walking. Since receiving their ESR AFO, they report it feels like they can walk normally again. The brace has not only improved their stability and stride, but also outlook. They are now going for walks, pushing their physical limits, and attending social events again.

This is just one example of the custom bracing. We collaborate closely with physiotherapists to ensure proper gait retraining, muscle re-education, and rehabilitation are integrated into the patient’s care plan. This ensures that the orthosis is not only worn, but also used effectively as part of a broader mobility strategy.
